395,535. Refrigerating. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Ford, J. G. ; Glasgow Road, Forest Hills, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Sept. 6, 1932, No. 24869. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1931. [Class 29.] Compression machines.-A refrigerating-unit is dried before charging with refrigerant by forcing dried gas at a temperature of not less than 90‹ C. through the unit at a rate of not less than .5 and not greater than 3 cubic feet per hour for each 5 litres of refrigerating unit internal volume. Air for drying is driven by a compressor 3 through a drying chamber 7 filled with calcium chloride or the like and a heater 9, and then passed under the control of a needle valve 12 to the units 15 which are being heated in an oven 11. A valve 17 operated by a clock switch 22 may be provided to permit only a periodic escape of drying gas, a valve 16, also operated by the clock switch, operating at these moments to apply full line pressure to the units by short-circuiting the needle valve 12 and cause a momentary strong purging flow of gas. The units may be given a preliminary evacuation. The temperature of the drying gas is preferably in the neighbourhood of 105‹ C. to 110‹ C.
