Abstract

394,909. Linear-dimension gauges. HOUNSFIELD, L. H., 3, Durrington Park Road, Wimbledon, London. Jan. 30, 1933, No. 2825. [Class 106 (ii).] A V-gauge comprises two operative edges 3, 4 of blades 1, 2, inclined at an angle, a hinge 5 where the edges if produced would meet, a third member 6 connecting the non-meeting ends of the blades in such a manner that the inclination of the blades can be varied and means 7 for locking the blades in this position. The yoke 6 is riveted to the blade 1 the blade 2 moving within the yoke until locked by tightening the screw 7. The blade 1 is graduated to measure relative areas and the blade 2 to give reduction per cent in area such as is required in measuring the area adjacent to the fracture in a test piece after test. The test-piece is shown at 9, 8 before and at 9, 10 after fracture. Prior to the test the stem is held opposite to zero on the blade 2 and the blades closed on it and locked. The cut-away part 11 enables withdrawal of the piece without disturbing the setting. The edges are chamfered except at the parts at the wide end of the V which are in most use and have a certain width to prevent damage. If the gauge is to be used for comparing the core strength of screws the blades may be chamfered on both sides. For this purpose the unit mark on blade 1 cannot be used, so the gauge is set to the standard bolt, say at " 8." then if a second screw comes to " 6," the core areas or strengths are as 8: 6. ,
