[Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv).] Planing; tools.-Apparatus for trimming welded tubes comprises a rotatable tool-holder h carrying a number of similar trimming tools i and rotated intermittently by ratchet mechanism to bring a fresh tool into cutting relation with the tube j when required. Brackets bare provided for attachment to the welding-machine. The bearing members f for the tool-holder spindle g and the bearing d of a roller 3 which supports the tube against the cut are adjustable by screws in vertical guides c. The outer cutting edge of each tool is concave and conforms to the surface of the tube, and the tool shanks may be of round or square section. The toolholder spindle carries a ratchet k engaged by a fixed locking-pawl l, Fig. 5, and by a pawl m carried by a casing o which may be oscillated to an extent determined by stops s, t by means of a treadle connected by lever mechanism v .. x to the casing. This movement, effected by the operator when a tool becomes worn, serves to bring a fresh tool into operation. An additional pair of adjustable rollers are provided at 5 and behind these is arranged a supplementary trimming tool 9 which is normally held out of action by a spring but is moved to operative position by a hand lever 12 so as to trim that portion of the tube which is left untrimmed during the changing of the main tools. The tools are re-sharpened by transferring the holder h to a grinding machine, Fig. 9, where the tools are brought in succession, by movement of a hand-lever 17, into engagement with the periphery of a profiled grinding wheel 16 which is trimmed by a diamond 18 moving in the required arcuate path about a pivot 19. Intermittent rotation of the holder h is effected by hand. For sharpening the faces of the cutting tools, the tool holder is placed on an adjustable table 20 and the tools brought successively by a lever 24 against the face of a grinding-wheel 21, which may be trued by a diamond 25. The holder is secured by a catch operated by a lever 23 and engageable with one of the tools or with one of a series of holes in the holder.
