Abstract

394,455. Pasteurizing milk &c. ENOCK, A. GRAHAM- and GRAHAMENOCK MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., Margaret Street Works, Windus Road, London. April 6, 1932, No. 9868. [Class 49.] In apparatus for pasteurizing milk or other liquids by a continuous process in which the heated liquid is delivered to a holding tank from which it flows by gravity over cooling coils or elements, the cooling elements are disposed below the holding tank and are embodied in a unitary structure which also supports the tank. As shown, main frame elements 1, 2 support a preheater 4, a heater 5, a milkholding tank 3, and a cooler 6 to which, in turn, the milk passes. The milk, under suitable pressure, first enters the preheater 4 where it flows through pipes heated by the pasteurized milk which flows over the pipes from a trough 26. The milk then passes to the heater 5 where it flows through inner tubes 11 provided with jackets 12 through which hot water, steam, &c., is circulated to raise its temperature to about 145‹ F. The heated milk passes through a pipe 16 to a distributor consisting of a body portion 17 divided into compartments each of which corresponds to one of the holding chambers in the tank 3 and is connected thereto by a pipe 22 .. 25, and a rotary head 18 having a passage 19 connected to pipe 16 and arranged to discharge into each of the compartments in turn, the head 18 being driven by a shaft 20 from timing mechanism 21. Each holding chamber has a rotary discharge valve 63 with a spout 64 through which the milk is discharged into the trough 26 after the holding period, usually about 30 mins., is completed. Each discharge valve 63 is operated from the timing mechanism 21 through a bell-crank lever 54 actuated by a cam 52, 53 on a disc 51 secured to a shaft 41 of the timing mechanism. One end of the lever 54 is attached by a pin 56 to one end of a lever 58, the other end of which is connected to a crank 60. A spring 59 keeps the lever 54 in contact with the cam. The crank 60 is mounted on a short shaft 61 on which is eccentrically mounted a pin 62 which operates the rotary discharge valve 64. The milk passes into trough 26 which has a perforated bottom through which it is distributed over the pipes 4 where it is pre-cooled by the milk entering the apparatus and then over the cooler 6 which may consist of a bank of pipes arranged in two or more sections with a hinged support to enable it to be swung out for cleaning &c. Where two sections are used, the upper may be supplied with mains water, and the lower with chilled water from a refrigerating unit 7 and circulated by a pump 33. The coolers are enclosed in a chamber, access to which is given by doors 30. The cooled milk is collected by a trough 28 which has hinged covers 32. The tank 3 may be suitably lagged and provided with hinged insulated covers 36, 37, and is carried on swinging supports pivotally mounted on the frame so that it may be tilted down by hydraulic jacks &c. for inspection and cleaning. The holder tank may have only two compartments instead of four and two similar machines may be operated in parallel to permit of continuous operation.
