Abstract

394,048. Oil engines. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Jan. 25, 1932, No. 2228. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1931. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] Part of the liquid fuel delivered by a nozzle 20 is directed over the surface of of an air inlet valve 9, whilst another part is directed towards a sparking-plug 14. The valve 9 and an exhaust valve 13 are situated in the walls of a frusto conical combustion chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, a sparking plug 14 is disposed in a recess between the valves 9, 13 and the part of the fuel which reaches the plug impinges first on the surface of the exhaust valve 13. The fuel nozzle traverses the water jacket of the cylinder and contains a fluid pressure actuated valve 21<11> which opens outwardly into the cylinder. The fuel is supplied through a pipe 35 to flutings 26 which terminate in a passage 23 having an outlet 25 through which the fuel is sprayed towards the igniter. The amount of fuel passing through the nozzle and the ratio of the fuel issuing at the outlet 25 to that issuing past the valve 21<11> varies automatically with the engine speed. In a modified construction, all the fuel from the nozzle is directed towards the air inlet valve 9 and a deflector composed of high heatresisting material is disposed so as to deflect a part of the fuel into the recess housing the sparking plug. The deflector is maintained at a temperature between the vaporizing and igniting points of the fuel by heating it by a thermocouple or other thermostatic control or by varying the position of its attachment to the cylinder head. A charge of carburetted air may be introduced through the valve 9, and an igniter consisting of a series of hot surfaces may replace the sparking-plug.
