Abstract

392,635. Stamping and embossing. MIDDLER, A. J., 15068, Littlefield Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Dec. 2, 1931, No. 33352. [Class 83 (iv).] Perforating.-Projections, enlargements, &c. are formed on tubular bodies carried in an enclosing die by internal fluid pressure, a heated core being held within the tube. A tube B is heated and is supported over a heated core C and in a two part die A, A<1> conical end pieces C<1>, C<2> and a nut cl screwed on an extension c of the core against the member C<2> keeping the ends of the tube fluid tight. Annular enlargements A<3> or local lugs or projections A<2> are produced when fluid is admitted through a pipe D. The fluid may comprise steam under pressure, or water to be converted into steam by contact with the heated work. In a modification the pressure is supplied by exploding a charge in a chamber C<8>, Fig. 4, or near the point at which the projection is to be made, the pressure on the tube being relieved when the projections are formed by a cutting-edge A<5> on an outlet A<4> which severs a piece of metal from the tube. The tube in either form may be screw-threaded into the end pieces C<6>, C<7>. The core may be heated with the tube, or independently thereof.
