Abstract

391,359. Laying pipes. JOHNSTON, J. T. M., London House, Crutched Friars, London. Aug. 26, 1932, No. 23952. [Class 99 (ii).] In laying pipe sections, a section 28 is lifted from the ground beside a trench 124 by apparatus comprising a U-shaped member 26 at the end of a block and tackle 25 which hangs from a carriage 15 adapted to be traversed along a beam 10, mounted on supports 11, to bring the section over the trench. The section is lowered to the level of the previously laid section 29 and a movement of the supports 11, which are provided with wheels 13, perpendicular to the beam 10, places the section 28 in register with the pipe sections already laid. Instead of moving the supports 11, the carriage may be formed in two parts, the one slidable in the other. A crank 19, operating through chain and sprocket gearing 18, rotates a screw 16 on the beam 10 to traverse the carriage 15. The screw 16 may be formed of sections and be operable from either end and one support 11 may be adjustably connected to the beam 10 by a bracket 20 and removable pin 21. More than two wheels 13 may be provided in which case jacks 14 will not be required to steady the supports. When jacks are provided the apparatus may be tilted by them to move the pipe section into place.
