Abstract

390,582. Motor vehicles. BURNEY, SIR C. D., 8, Broadway Court, Westminster. Jan. 5, 1932, No. 290. [Class 79 (iii).] In a motor road vehicle having a pressure water circulating system between an engine at the rear and a radiator at the front, the water-circulating system includes a water reservoir tank located above the level of the engine and radiator. Water is drawn from the reservoir by a pump, which delivers it to a water motor driving the radiator fan and thence to the radiator, from which the water passes to the engine at the rear either direct or through an additional radiator at the rear, the engine jacket discharging into the reservoir. The engine 1 disposed behind the back axle drives a water pump 4, which draws water from an elevated tank 5 and forces it along a pipe 6 to the front of the car, where it drives a water motor 7 operating a suction fan 8, and then passes to a radiator 2, the return pipe 9 from which passes to the top of a rear radiator 3 having a connection at the bottom to the water jacket of the engine 1, the water finally returning to the tank 5. The tank 5 is provided with a spring-loaded relief valve which permits escape of water on excessive pressure occurring, but prevents leakage in the position of maximum inclination of the car. A suction valve allows air to be drawn into the tank 5 should the pressure fall below a predetermined value. The pump 4 is short-circuited by a pipe 13 fitted with a spring-loaded valve which is adapted to open on excessive pump pressure at high engine speeds. The air which passes through the front radiator 2 is divided by the inclined side and bottom walls of the petrol tank 15, Figs. 1 and 3, into two laterally-diverging streams a and a lower stream b. The streams a pass out of the car body through rearwardly-facing openings 16a covered with grids, and escape through recesses 17a in the body, which recesses also accommodate the steering movements of the wheels. The stream b passes through an opening 16 in the bottom of the car and beneath an under shield 18, and at the rear some of the air is sucked up through an opening 20, partly by the action of a rear fan 12, and is discharged through the rear radiator 3 and also over the engine 1 and through louvres 21. Some of the heated air stream b may be passed into the interior of the car through shutter-controlled louvres 24 in the front bulkhead.
