Abstract

Tetrakisazo dyes are made by coupling a diazotized nitro- or acidylamino-arylamine sulphonic acid of the formula Y,Ar,X,Ar,N H2 (wherein Y=NO2 or NHAc, Ac being acidyl; Ar stands for arylene, and X stands for CONH- or -SO2NH-, and in which the Ar that is doubly combined with nitrogen carries the sulphonic group) with a p-coupling middle component, again diazotizing and coupling with an N-substituted J-acid or H-acid containing a diazotizable amino group in the N-substituent, reducing the nitro-group or removing the acidyl group, tetrazotizing and coupling with two mols. of a "yellow component," i.e. one which when coupled with diazotized p-aminobenzoic acid gives a yellow monoazo compound, e.g. a pyrazolone, an acidylacetylarylamine, 2 : 4-dioxyquinoline, methyl ketol, salicylic acid, resorcinol. The tetrazotization and final coupling may be carried out on the fibre. Greenish blue to green shades are obtained. In examples the following dyestuffs are prepared (1) p-nitrobenzoyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphonic acid --> 1-amino-2-ethoxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid --> N-p-aminobenzoyl J acid (reduced) \sQ 1-p-sulphophenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone or (on the fibre) acetoacetyl-o-chloraniline, (2) 1-amino-4 (3<1>-nitrobenzenesulphonylamino) benzene-2-sulphonic acid --> 2 : 5 dimethoxyaniline --> N-p-aminobenzoyl J acid (reduced) \sQ (on the fibre) 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, (3) 1-amino-4 (3<1>-acetylaminobenzenesulphonylamino) benzene-2-sulphonic acid --> 1-naphthylamine-7-sulphonic acid --> N-p-aminobenzoyl H acid (hydrolysed) \sQ acetoacetic anilide.
