[Class 132 (i).] Exercising-apparatus comprises a plurality of members such as straps or cords stretched substantially parallel to the floor, a friction member in frictional contact with the straps and movable relatively thereto, and a handle or grip device associated with the friction member and the straps and adapted to be moved by hand to produce relative movement against frictional resistance between the friction member and the straps. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two straps 3, 3 are attached at one end to the hooks 1, 1 and at the other to cords 5, 5 provided with stretchers 6, 6 and fixed to hooks 2, 2. The friction member comprises two wooden rods, 7, 8 above and below the straps 3, 3 respectively, and adjustably connected by bolts 9 and wing-nuts 10. To rod 7 is adjustably connected by bolts 12 and wing nuts 13 a handle 11. The friction on pulling bar 11 is greater than when pushing it. A seat 15 is mounted on rubber-tyred wheels 16 running on rails 18 provided with stops 19. A foot strap 21 is attached to eyes 22. In a modification a single cross-bar with slits or holes at the ends through which the straps pass, and to which bar the handle is adjustably connected as above, may be employed as the friction member. In a further modification endless cords passing twice over fixed pulleys, or pulleys only rotatable with difficulty against frictional resistance, and to which the cross-bar handle is attached, may be employed. In a still further modification clips adapted to grip the straps when pulled in one direction and to release them or grip them less tightly when moved in the opposite direction may be employed.
