Abstract

Isoprenoid hydrocarbons are extracted from balata or guttapercha by means of chloroform after removing the resins with acetone. Rubber-like isoprene polymers may be partially depolymerized, mixed with a polymerizable compound such as indene, styrene or coumarone and subsequently repolymerized. Examples describe the preparation of syrupy, pasty or solid interpolymers from (a) methyl acrylate, vinyl cyanide and isoprene, (b) isoprene and styrene, (c) methyl acrylate and coumarone, (d) methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, (e) methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and dibutyl phthalate, (f) methyl acrylate and isoprene, (g) isoprene and methyl methacrylate, (h) methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate, by heat, using benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst.
