Abstract
In treating liquids by base-exchange, material is used which contains hydrogen as the interchangeable ion. Such an agent may be obtained by treating zeolite or zeolitic material with dilute acid. The process may be used for obtaining valuable alkali salts, such as lithium carbonate, from dilute solutions.ALSO:In treating liquids by base-exchange, material is used which contains hydrogen as the interchangeable ion. Such an agent may be obtained by treating zeolite or zeolitic material with dilute acid. The material is regenerated by treatment with extremely dilute acids. Hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic, acetic or lactic acids may be used. For treating water the material may contain hydrogen ions and alkali ions in proportion respectively to the temporary and permanent hardness of the water, regeneration being effected by simultaneous or successive application of appropriate quantities of dilute acids and salt solutions. Alternatively water may be softened by passage first through a base-exchange material containing hydrogen, then through one containing alkali and finally through one containing hydrogen. The process may be used for obtaining valuable alkali salts, such as lithium carbonate from dilute solution.
