Abstract

In the extraction of fats by solvents in a centrifugal machine the chamber of the closed hollow rotating body 1 is divided into concentric chambers 3, 4 by a filter 2, the material being packed in the chamber 4 and solvent admitted and removed by pipes 5, 10 concentric with the axis of rotation and revolving therewith Normally the solvent is forced through the material against the p centrifugal force by a pump 8 via pipes 6, 5, 7, chambers 3, 4, and pipe 10, and when extraction is complete solvent is withdrawn by reversing the pump or <PICT:0388966/III/1> is forced out by steam admitted through the pipe 10. When trichlorethylene or other solvent heavier than the fish meal or other material treated is used the material is packed between two filters 2. The pump 8 may be replaced by a suction pump attached to the pipe 10 whereby the solvent is drawn through the material. The solvent may be passed in the opposite direction, the axis of the centrifuge may be horizontal, the centrifuge filters may be of other shape, and the material may be heated and may be partially defatted by centrifuging before introducing solvent, the fat being withdrawn by the pump 8.
