Abstract
Natural and artificial dispersions of rubber and the like are pre-plastified by treatment with ozone, applied by passing a stream of ozonized air or oxygen through the dispersion probably in the presence of an anti-coagulating agent such as ammonia. After treatment the latex is allowed to stand at room temperature for 3-60 hours. If desired a small quantity of a reducing agent substantially inert towards rubber and substantially a non-coagulant such as a sulphite, bisulphite, hydrosulphite, sulphoxilate, or a mixture of hydrosulphite and sulphoxilate is added after the standing period to counteract any tendency to deterioration due to residual excess of ozone. The preplastifying process eliminates either wholly or to a very large extent the usual mastication process and the addition of softening agents. The ozonized gas stream serves as the agitating means as it passes through the latex and ensures uniform contact of the ozone with the latex. In an example a current of air is blown through an ozonizer capable of ozonizing 250 litres of air with 50 milligrams of ozone per litre, the ozonized air is passed for 10 hours through 15 litres of latex maintained at 15-40 DEG C., thus introducing 33 milligrams of ozone per litre. The treated latex is allowed to stand for 24 hours, 150 grams of bisulphite solution are added and the mixture stood for 24 hours when it is ready for use by direct deposition. Specifications 284,608, 292,964, 330,520, [all in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and 351,012 are referred to.
