'[Class 35.] An impulse mechanism for an ignition magneto has a driving cap 7 and a stop cap 2 fixed to the magneto rotor, the two caps being connected by a spring 8, each end of which engages peripheral slots 13, 14 in both caps registering with each other. Two pawls 3 pivoted on the stop cap 2 and carrying weights 6 engage a stationary stop 4 on the inner side of a protecting cover 5. Releasing lugs 9 on the driving cap 7 act on the pawls to permit the stop cap 2 and rotor to be rotated by the spring 8, and owing to the lost motion between the spring ends and the caps, there is no shock as the stop-cap comes to rest. Instead of the two separate slots in each cap, the material between them may be removed to form one slot in each cap. In this case, the spring may consist of a broad leaf spring including a part only of the periphery. Two springs may be employed, one end of each being fixed to the driving cap and the other ends engaging the slots. The spring may be mounted between or within the two caps.
