[Class 8 (i).] A combined ventilating and vacuum cleaning installation comprises a reversing valve so that a uni-directional pump may create positive or negative pressure in the system, and portable vacuum cleaning apparatus, adapted to be connected to the system at various points having filtering means for preventing the entry of dust into the permanent parts of the system. The reversing valve comprises a pair of plates 11 strained to oppositely curved or double concave form with packing 12 therebetween rotatably mounted in a cylindrical casing f having connections with the inlet and outlet of the fan c, Fig. 1, an outlet conduit h and another valve casing g which contains a semi-cylindrical obturating member 16 adapted to be turned through 180‹ by means of a propeller 18 on the reversal of the direction of the air current. By this means the pump is connected to the rooms either through a heat exchanger o positioned behind a fireplace p or through a byepass according as to whether the pump is supplying or withdrawing air. The air conduits lead to openings q in the walls of the building, each opening being controlled by clack valves s, t adapted to close either outwardly or inwardly according to the direction of the air current and which may be held in a mid-position when the supply or withdrawal of air to or from the opening is required.
