Abstract

Waste acids obtained in the refining of mineral oils, tar oils, &c. are treated with nitric acid or higher oxides of nitrogen during their concentration in order to recover their sulphuric acid content. The nitric oxide evolved in the process may be converted into nitric acid or higher oxides of nitrogen and returned to the process by absorbing the nitrogen oxides &c. either in the waste acid that is to be concentrated or in a portion of the sulphuric acid that has already been concentrated, and adding this acid to the waste acid to be concentrated.
