[Class 138 (ii).] A rotary washing-machine having a directlyheated motor-driven receptacle is provided with means to prevent both the heater and the motor being operative simultaneously. In Figs. 1 and 2 the electric or gas heater 13 and the motor 8 driving the pinion 9 which engages the driving rim 7 of the receptacle 3 rotating about an inclined axis, are carried by arms 10, 12 spaced apart by 90‹ on a vertical shaft 11 so that only one may be in operative position. The upper trunnion 4 may be hollow to permit escape of air during heating, or a relief valve may be provided in the cover of the drum, or an arm 24 may be provided on the shaft 11 which prevents the heater from being moved to operative position until the cover 6 is raised, after which the arm 24 engages beneath and retains the cover open. A mechanical interlock between the switch 17, Fig. 3, of the motor circuit and the switch or tap 20 of the heater comprises a disc 14 on the shaft 11 having two radial notches in its periphery spaced apart by 90‹, and a disc 18, 21 each having one radial notch 19, 22, on the rotatable member of each switch or tap. In Fig. 5, when the motor is in the operative position a pin 28 projecting through a hollow arm 26 in the shaft 11 is engaged in a slot 29 of a guide 30 and the shaft 11 cannot be rotated until the connector plug 25 of the motor 8 is plugged into the arm 26 to force back the pin 28 and piston 27. A flange 31 on the guide 30 prevents withdrawal of the connector plug from the hollow arm whilst the motor is in the inoperative position and the heater is in operative position. In another modification the motor and heater are stationary but their controlling switch and tap are provided with inter-engaging parts that prevent simultaneous operation of both. In another form, Fig. 11, the swinging of the heater 13 into position simultaneously moves a tensioning roller 40 out of contact with a driving belt 34 whereby the drive from the stationary motor shaft 9 is not transmitted to the pulley 35 on the drum 3. In another form wherein the heater is swung into operative position this action puts a forked member on the frame carrying the heater into the path of a lug projecting from the drum thereby preventing the latter from rotating. In another form, Fig. 13, the supply of gas to the heater 13 operates a diaphragm motor 45 to raise a rod 46 into locking engagement with the toothed driving rim 7 of the drum.
