Abstract
387,046. Oil switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and TRENCHAM, H., Oakthorpe, Kings End, Ruislip, Middlesex. Oct. 15, 1931, No. 28678. [Class 38 (v).] Arc-rupturing.- The stationary contacts 2 are hollow and provided with renewable arcing tips 6 under the oil in the tank. They are engaged by intermediate contacts 13 carried by an insulating cross-bar 14 supported with some lost motion controlled by the springs 17 and pins 18 from the main conducting cross-bar 3 which carries the main movable contacts 12. When the main cross-bar is moved down to open the switch, the main contacts 12 leave the intermediate contacts 13 and draw an arc, thereby developing a pressure within the tank. Meanwhile, the intermediate contact remains in contact with the stationary contact under the action of the .spring 17 until the lost motion is taken up whereupon the intermediate contacts are withdrawn from the fixed contacts and a blast of oil is forced up the hollow contacts and through openings 19 into the upper chamber 8 from which it flows back to the tank.
