Abstract

386,800. Beach groins and the like. BRAITHWAITE & CO. ENGINEERS, Ltd., Broadway Buildings, Westminster, and TAYLOR, F. M. DU-PLAT-, 36, Victoria Street, London. Feb. 2, 1932, Nos. 3046, 13530, and 22745. [Class 68 (ii).] A groin or beach barrier is supported and anchored by means of screw piles so as to be vertically adjustable and removable, the planks being free to slide vertically and to adjust themselves automatically to underscoured parts. Fig. 3 shows a pile and plank groin consisting of screw piles 10 and planks 12 bolted to bands 13, which slide on the piles 10. The ends of the planks have galvanized steel wrappers, and are slightly spaced apart behind the washer plates 14 to permit them to adjust themselves, and for the same reason the bolt holes are slotted. Limit clips 17 may be fitted on the piles. The planks may be replaced by steel &c. plates. Groins in permanently submerged positions are driven by an extension bar 19, Fig. 9, connected to the upper end of the pile 18 by a spigot-and-socket joint at the point 20. The pile, the upper end of which is secured by a cam in a sleeve 34, is floated into position on a raft 31, is lowered into position and screwed down, the sleeve 34 being released by operating the lever 36, and lifted. Slotted carriers for the ends of the planks are then slid down the piles, and sheet-steel planks are fitted in position. Beach traps may be similarly built of screw piles and perforated plates, which may be set vertically, or may be arched in section, the landward inclined face being shorter than the seaward face, the lower edges of both being buried.
