[Classes 20 (iv) and 107.] A process of constructing paving consists in spreading and consolidating a layer of broken stones, forcing a grouting of cement into the same in a quantity and manner adapted to ensure penetration of the grouting into all the interstices between the broken stones and a surplus of grouting to accumulate upon the surface of the layer, and working a layer of broken stones of smaller size into the surplus .grouting before the latter has set so that portions of the stones of the second layer are forced into the interstices between the uppermost stones of the first layer. Portions of the stones of the second layer may be left projecting above the surface of the grouting so as to serve as keys for a surface layer of bitumen or the like which is applied after the grouting has set. Alternatively, the upper surface of the second layer may be rolled until it is level with the surface of the grouting, and a wearing coat of bitumen or the like may be applied before the grouting has set. If desired, after the second layer of stones has been rolled, one or more further layers of stone of progressively decreasing sizes may be rolled into the surplus grouting which was extruded during rolling of the previous layer.
