Abstract
384,930. Preventing and extinguishing fires. PUECH, E. F. A., 26, Rue de Montbrison, St. Etienne, France. July 4, 1932, No. 18880. Convention date, July 4, 1931. [Class 47 (ii).] A closed cowling 1 for the engines of aircraft is provided with ventilating openings 2 .. 3<11> which are provided with external shields 4 .. 4<11> and are covered internally by flash-preventing screens comprising juxtaposed layers of metal gauze, asbestos, or like fabric, and metal grid. The jointing portions of the cowling are formed with a layer of fireproof material provided with steel bristles, which intermesh as shown in Fig. 5. Inside the cowling are arranged pipes 5, Fig. 2, with perforations directed towards the screens. In case of a fire within the cowling, petrol is supplied to the pipes 5. This burns and rapidly consumes the oxygen within the cowling, thus extinguishing the fire. Instead of petrol, an extinguishing fluid such as carbontetrachloride may be supplied to the pipes 5.
