[Class 138 (i).] A machine for washing dishes and other articles comprises a casing 10, Figs. 1 and 2, with a cover enclosing articles or racks containing articles and means for supplying washing and rinsing liquid thereto, the cover comprising a fixed portion 13 and a movable pivotallymounted portion 15, the latter being prevented from contacting with the articles or racks by means of a guard member 130. To prevent escape of liquid, a flange 15<1> on the lower portion 15 engages a lip 13<1> on the portion 13, when the cover is closed, and the front edge of the portion 15 lies within a recess 226. The bottom of the casing 10 comprises a well 11 for washing liquid, which is adapted to be withdrawn by an electrically-driven pump 17 and forced through nozzles 103 in a rotary distribution 102 to be discharged over the dishes or other articles. The liquid returns through a strainer 52 to the well 11. A detachable overflow pipe 47 is provided in the well. The distributer 102 is also provided with spray pipes 114 communicating through holes 118 with a hollow tube 98 which is adapted to be connected through a valve 123 with rinsing water. The valve also controls the supply of rinsing water to a pipe with jets 127 at the top of the cover. Control of the valve is effected by means of a rod 152 with operating handle 151, the rod carrying a sleeve member 155 provided with arms 157, 162. The arm 157 is connected to a switch controlling the operation of the motor 18 which drives the pump 17, and the arm 162 is adapted to open the valve 123 against the action of a spring. The rod 152 is capable of taking up three positions, in one of which the valve is closed and the motor circuit is completed to cause the pump to effect a washing operation on the dishes, in a second neutral position the pump is inoperative, and in a third position which is usually taken up after the washing operation and while the motor is running of its own momentum, the motor circuit is opened and rinsing water is supplied to the dishes. Interlocking means between the rod 152 and the movable cover member 15 are provided to prevent operation of the wash water circulating system when the cover is open. The rod actuates a cam-plate 185, Fig. 8, which is adapted to engage a latch member 182. This member has an end 188 received in a socket 186 when the cover member 15 is closed. With the latch in this position, the cam-plate can be readily turned, but when the cover is open the latch obstructs movement of the plate. The washing machine is supported on a table shown in Fig. 13 and comprising two shelves, the upper one of which has an opening to receive the machine and is covered by a top 215 with a corresponding opening 216. The machine is inserted from below after the cover members 13, 15 have been removed, and is supported by removable ledges upon which flanges of the casing 10 rest. The top 215 is slightly dished to drain liquid to the front of the opening 216 leading into the wall 11 of the machine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises details of the pump 10 forming the subject-matter of Specification 381,508. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
