Abstract

384,455. Sulphite pulp digestion. PATENTAKTIEBOLAGET GRONDALRAMEN, 28, Jakobsbergsgatan, Stockholm. Dec. 30, 1931, No. 36000. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Class 96.] Wood chips &c. are partially digested with a solution of an alkali metal bisulphate or with a nearly neutral solution thereof and an alkali metal monosulphite without added sulphurous acid and digestion completed with the chips &c. submerged in liquor containing sufficient free SO2. The first solution may be preheated and circulated for one or more hours with indirect heating to 120‹ C. The liquor may be drawnoff until the digester is “-full and the second solution introduced cold under pressure due to liberation of SO2 therefrom. Circulation and heat are again applied for 5-10 hours. The process is stated to save time and avoid the formation of thio-sulphates, sulphates, sulphuric acid, and sulphur, with reduced risk of " black digestion." In an example a 100 cu. metre digester is charged with 25 tons of wood chips and 3350 kgm. of NaHSO3 in 25 cu. metres of water circulated at 135‹ C. and 2À5 atmospheres for 5 hours, and then partly replaced by 60-65 cu. metres of liquor containing waste liquor and/or washing water.
