Abstract

383,466. Weaving pile fabrics with tufts knotted around warp threalds. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co., Inc. ; Thompsonville, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Jan. 5, 1932, No. 314. [Classes 142 (i), 142 (ii), and 142 (iii).] The warp threads in the lower shed are crossed to the right the space of two dents by a shogging comb 59, which is then raised to engage the upper warp threads, the shed being closed, whereupon the comb is shogged one dent to the left, and afterwards moved to the fell of the fabric, whereby the warp threads are crossed near the fell and are held crossed whilst the lay is back. The tuft yarns are then moved downwardly through the shed between the crossed warps by nippers 34, 35. These then rise, the comb is lowered and the disengaged warp threads uncross and bend the tuft yarns a as shown in Fig. 6. The lay next beats up, the nippers again descend through the warp threads to complete the knot, ßs shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The nippers are next lowered to tighten the knots, opened to release the tuft yarns and moved frontwardly by the engagement therewith of a cam-controlled lever 89 having a V-shaped upper end. A hump 87 on each nipper finger tucks the second end of each tuft frontwardly, as shown in Fig. 10. The shed next changes, the needle inserts two wefts whilst the tuft ends are still engaged by the comb, whereupon this is lowered and two more wefts are inserted. The shogging comb 59 is supported on levers 61 carried by pins on rocking levers 63 secured to a shaft 64, which is moved axially to shog the comb by a forked lever 70 carrying an adjustable cam plate having an inclined slot engaged by a roller on a cam-controlled lever. The shaft 64 is rocked by an arm 65 and cam-controlled lever mechanism so that the levers 63 move the comb vertically, whilst the levers 61 are rocked about their pivots by cam-controlled lever mechanism to move the comb backwards and forwards. The nippers are opened by springs 41, Fig. 10, and closed by an axially moved shaft 42 provided with enlarged parts 43. The nipper mechanism is supported by arms 45 actuated by cam-controlled lever mechanism to raise and lower the nippers, whilst these are rotated about their shaft 39 by rack and pinion mechanism. The fabric is positioned by a beam 92. Beat-up motions.-The lay swords are rocked by lever mechanism operated by a cam having three projections 23.
