Abstract

382,983. Flexible-unjointed hinges. ARMSTRONG, F. G. G., 14, York Road, Beverley, Yorkshire. Sept. 2, 1931, No. 24602. [Class 65 (ii).] A resiliently bushed connecting-rod or the like, such as an arm of a shock absorber, is formed by permanently deforming a tube to engage a hole of different size in the rod and then forcing a resilient bush into the tube so that it is stressed to a greater degree in the plane of connection of the tube and rod than over its remaining length. The bush is mounted on an inner bolt or stud before or after being forced into the tube. In the arrangement shown, the tube 12 is pushed through a hole in the end of the rod 17 and its ends are then expanded as shown so that the rod is fixed on the tube. The inner member of the joint is formed by a bolt 14 having a collar at one end of the joint and a nut and washer at the other to hold the rubber bush 11 In a modification, the bolt has a collar at each end of the joint, and the bush 11 is split for assemblv on the bolt. The inner member of the joint may alternatively be a sleeve placed over the bolt, in which case it may be formed with a local enlargement in the plane of the rod to increase the compression of the rubber bush at this point. The arm 17 may be integral with the tube 12.
