Abstract
A process for the production of magnesium consists in reducing at a high temperature magnesia, or dolomite, or a silicate or carbonate of magnesium by silicon and condensing the vapour produced. The reducing agent may be pure silicon or magnesium silicide or a high silicon ferrosilicon or any appropriate alloy of silicon which may be prepared by reduction of silicates by carbon in the electric furnace. A very intimate pulverized mixture of the magnesia containing substance and reducing agent is compressed and heated in a fireclay or iron retort communicating with an iron receiver in which the reduced magnesium condenses. The reduction may take place under reduced pressure or in a reducing atmosphere by passing a gentle current of hydrogen through the apparatus or preferably by maintaining in the apparatus a slight pressure of hydrogen or hydrocarbon. The residue of the reduction is a mixture of silica and magnesia which may also contain small quantities of magnesium silicide and silicon. By reducing this residue and an excess of silica by carbon in the electric furnace a mixture of magnesium silicide and silicon is obtained which may be employed for the reduction of a further quantity of magnesia.
