[Class 78 (i).] In shoots of the kind provided at intervals with resilient or yielding shutters which form traps adapted to retard or arrest the flow of material and to yield when the pressure on them reaches a particular magnitude, the shutters are arranged in pairs and the material passes between them. In one construction each shutter comprises a sheet of rubber or other material 4, Fig. 1, one face of which is in engagement with a series of flat steel springs 5 supported by a curved strip 8. Each shutter is secured to the shoot by a bolt 6 passed through the parts 4, 5, 8. The resilience of the shutter is varied by altering the position of a nut 10 on a bolt 9. In a modified construction each shutter comprises a number of sheetmetal plates 12, Fig. 5, each of which is secured to a pair of arms 14 pivoted on a shaft 15. A leaf spring 16 bears against each arm. A flanged guard plate 17 is secured to the shoot. In a further modification the arms 18, Fig. 7, of certain shutters are provided with arms 19 which are connected by helical springs 20 to tension bolts 21 connected to the shoot.
