[Class 100 (iv).] Relay type-wheel actions.-Selective-printing mechanism, particularly for record-controlled tabulating-machines, comprises a series of carriers each supporting a constantly rotating type-wheel and adapted when a stop-lever is moved into engagement with the type-wheel, or gearing therefor, to move and thereby cause the type-wheel to roll over the paper. In the mechanism shown in the Figure, a type-wheel 2, forming one of a series, is mounted on a carrier 4 which is supported by links 15, 16 and is provided with pinions 7, 8 gearing with a pinion 6 on the type-wheel, and a continuouslyrotating toothed shaft 9 on the framework 21 respectively. A spring 22 normally holds the carrier in contact with a stop 20. A stoplever 28 is urged by a spring 30 but is normally restrained by a hook 29 connected to means, such as the armature 43 of a magnet 33, controlled by the record cards. The type-wheel runs on an ink roller 24 and prints on a web 27 passing over a platen 26, a gap in the typewheel normally facing the platen. When the magnet is energized, the stop-lever engages the pinion 8, the carrier is moved upwards and forwards, and the type-wheel rolls over the web to effect impression from the selected type. To permit yielding of the type-wheel, the pivot 14 connecting the carrier and the link 16 is arranged in a slot 51. After impression, the carrier moves upwards and rearwards and the typewheel is lifted off the web. During upwards movement of the carrier, a roller 53 thereon restores the stop-lever. The carrier is returned by co-operation of an extension 52 of the link 16 with a universal bar 34 secured to a rocking frame 35 operated by a cam 38 on the shaft 9.
