Abstract
379,785. Tempering leather. POCHIN, H. S., Evington Valley Road, Leicester. June 16, 1931, Nos. 17490 and 27569. [Class 17 (i).] Leather, e.g. shoe soles and stiffeners, is " tempered " by treatment with water under reduced pressure. The leather may be immersed or the water may be sprayed on to the leather. Soles may be placed between the turns of a helical coil # in a chamber a which is then exhausted to about 25 inches of mercury, as indicated by the gauge c. Atomizers d then spray water on to both sides of the soles. In a few minutes, an air cock g is opened and the water drained away by a pipe h. In a modification, the soles are placed in a rack #<2> above the water level. The chamber is then exhausted by a pump band the rack, which is counterbalanced by a weight m lowered into the liquid. While the soles are immersed, the vacuum may be broken and additional air pumped into the chamber. The vacuum may then be reestablished and the soles raised above the water level, air being then gradually admitted. Soles to be cemented on are, preferably, coated with cement before treatment.
