Abstract
379,747. Reducing resistance to propulsion. MAcCASKIE, T. M., 6735, St. Lawrence Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. June 4, 1931, No. 16385. Convention date, March 16, 1931. [Classes 4, 113 (i) and 113 (ii).] To reduce the resistance to propulsion of air and water-craft, the skin below the waterline is covered with overlapping plates or scales 18 between which is forced a lubricating material of a slimy or oily character, e.g. fish glue mixed with an oil. The scales are provided with grooves 19 at their tails which engage with complementary wedge-shaped excrescences 17 on longitudinal ribs 16 which are mounted on a perforated skin 14 in turn spaced from the skin-plating proper by perforated Z-bars 10. The lubricating-fluid is supplied from a reservoir 23 above the water-line through the inlets 25 and forces its way out between the scales. The plant for supplying the liquid under pressure to the reservoir 23 comprises a tank 27, the liquid in which is put under pressure by the pump 31. The tank communicates with the reservoir 23 through the pipe 26 provided with a shock-absorbing ram 29 and the necessary gauges and stop-cocks.
