Abstract
379,629. Cylindrical-journal and thrust bearings. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Moyer, H. R. ; 2022, Boggs Avenue, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Feb. 22, 1932, No. 5230. Convention date, March. 24, 1931. [Class 12 (i).] A bearing comprises a plurality of arcuate-shaped segments 4<1>, 4<11>, formed of fibrous material impregnated and bound together by a heat-hardened binder, a portion of the fibres in each of the layers of the segments being perpendicular to the bearing surface. The segments are supported by a metal shell 9 and end segment 4<11> being secured in position by dowel pins 10. An end thrust block 6 with the fibres arranged axially of the shaft is fitted in a recess 12<1> in the shell 9 and is secured therein by dowel pins 10<1>. The block 6 and the segments 4<1>, 4<11>, are held against rotation by a pair of plates 8. The segments 4<1>, 4<11> are formed from a strip of fibrous sheet material having a plurality of diamond-shaped notches therein. The sheet is folded into a strip 1, Fig. 1, so that the diamond notches form V-notches 2, and after impregnation with a binder such as a phenolic condensation product with or without a lubricant such as graphite, finely divided lead, or mixtures thereof, the strip is wound upon a mandril 3 into cylindrical shape. The mandril is then subjected to heat and pressure, after which the fibrous cylinder is removed therefrom and cut into segments.
