Abstract

The process of printing cotton with sulphur dyes is improved by incorporating in the printing paste a hydroxyanthraquinone, aminoanthraquinone, arylsulphaminoanthraquinone or anthraquinone carboxylic or sulphonic acid or salt thereof, or a reduction product of any of these substances still containing oxygen in the ms-position, or a mixture of compounds of these types. Anthraquinone itself, or a reduction product thereof containing oxygen in the ms-position, may also be incorporated in the printing pastes. The added substances are employed in finely divided form, obtained, for example, by precipitation from sulphuric acid solution, or they may be converted into reduction products still containing oxygen in the ms-position, by reduction in the presence of glycerine or other similar water-soluble alcohols before or after addition of the sulphur dye. The printing pastes may also contain glycerine or other water-soluble alcohols, vat dyes, and hydrotropic agents. In examples, (1) the dye obtained by sulphurizing carbazole-indophenol is pasted with anthraflavic acid, glycerine and sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate, mixed with glycerine, grape sugar, calcined sodium carbonate, sodium benzylsulphanilate, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate and a wheat starch-tragacanth thickening, and printed in the customary manner, (2) the dye used in example (1) is reduced with sodium hydrosulphite in the presence of glycerine, anthraflavic acid, aqueous ammonia and sodium tetrahydronaphthalene - b - sulphonate, and printed with the additions specified in example (1); the anthraflavic acid may be replaced by 2-hydroxyanthraquinone, and the sodium tetrahydronaphthalene - b - sulphonate by other hydrotropic agents, e.g. the sodium salts of dimethylmetanilic acid, dimethylsulphanilic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid or cresotinic acid, (3) Indocarbon CL is pasted with glycerine, anthraflavic acid, and sodium benzenesulphonate, and printed with addition of caustic soda lye, calcined potassium carbonate, grape sugar, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate, and a thickening containing wheat starch, British gum and sodium benzylsulphanilate, (4) Indocarbon CL is reduced with sodium hydrosulphite in the presence of glycerine, anthraflavic acid and in the presence or absence of ammonia, with addition of sodium benzenesulphonate if desired, (5) the dye used in example (1), or Hydron Navy blue C, with or without an admixture of an indigoid or anthraquinonoid vat dye, is pasted with thiodiglycol, sodium benzylsulphanilate, caustic soda lye, sodium carbonate, 2-aminoanthraquinone (which may be replaced by 2 : 6-dihydroxyanthraquinone or by an anthraquinone sulphonic or carboxylic acid or salt thereof), sodium hydrosulphite, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate, wheat starch, and British gum, (6) Indocarbon CL is pasted with thiodiglycol, caustic soda, sodium carbonate, anthraflavic acid (which may be replaced by 2-amino- or 2 : 6- or 2 : 7-diaminoanthraquinone or by an anthraquinone sulphonic or carboxylic acid or salt thereof), sodium benzylsulphanilate, grape sugar, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate, wheat starch and British gum, and (7) the dye used in example (1) is pasted with glycerine and 2-aminoanthraquinone and printed with addition of a thickening containing tragacanth and other gums, wheat starch, glycerine, potassium carbonate and sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate. Instead of the anthraquinone derivatives used in the examples, the reaction products of 2-aminoanthraquinones with substituted or unsubstituted aromatic sulphochlorides, e.g. 2-(p-toluenesulphamino)-anthraquinone, or 2 : 6-di (p-toluenesulphamino)-anthraquinone, can be used. Specifications 349,955, 350,963, and 371,848 are referred to.
