Abstract
Sulphur dioxide is recovered from gases by treating them with an aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide and/or alkali sulphite, the solution also containing a substance giving rise to an acidity which increases with increasing temperature but not giving rise to a permanent precipitate under the conditions of working, and thereafter subjecting the used solvent to heating with or without reduction of pressure. Aluminium or chromium chlorides are suitable substances. Ammonium chloride is unsuitable. According to an example, sulphur dioxide is absorbed in an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite and aluminium chloride at 20 DEG C. and is recovered by heating the solution to 100 DEG C. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of ferric chloride.
