Abstract

A nutrient medium, particularly for the culture of gonococci for the production of toxin, is obtained by boiling placenta in water in such proportions that about 1 part of aqueous extract is obtained from 1,5 parts of placenta. The extract may be obtained (1) by using the stated proportions of placenta and water, (2) by boiling a placenta in a greater proportion of water, using the extract so obtained to treat a second placenta, and so on till the required proportions are obtained, or (3) by concentration of a more dilute extract, preferably in vacuo. The extract is mixed with 0,1 per cent of sodium chloride and other customary additions such as peptone, whey, and carbohydrates, and is adjusted to PH 7,2 to 7,4 by addition of normal sodium carbonate.
