Abstract

376,798. Stop valves ; fluid-actuated valves. WARDLAW, SIR H., 34, Dandenong Road, Caulfield, Melbourne, Australia. Feb. 12, 1931, No. 4383. [Class 135.] A water tap or cock of the kind having a slow-closing action comprises an operating spindle such as J, J2, Fig. 1, a lift beat valve member, as F, separate from but pushed open .positively by the spindle against the action of a spring E, said spindle being fitted with a piston J<1> disposed in a cylinder R so as to allow water to leak beyond the piston in opening to provide a cushion to check the return movement of the valve. The arrangement may be applied to a manually-operated valve e.g. lever-operated or screw-spindle type, or a press-top type, as shown in Fig. 1, and the valve member may consist of a ball F, or a cone, mushroom, flat, or semispherical member. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement applied in a fluidactuated valve F operated by a leaky piston J<1> under the control of a pilot valve F<1> of similar type with an operating spindle J<2> and check piston, as above. The valve seating H for the ball valve F is located between a flange G and a cage I, L, the spindle end being formed as a cylindrical closure member in the cage I, L with an upper tapered part serving to graduate the opening for the passage of water. The ball valve may seat on the flange G when the cage I, L and upper parts are removed for re-washering the tap. The spindle is packed, as shown, and kept fluid tight by a washer O and spring N. The valve closure spring E is located in a tubular housing B screwed into the body A of the tap, as shown.
