Abstract
Oily sludge from destructive hydrogenation is passed, under pressure and above 250 DEG C., preferably at 350 DEG C., through a pipe 1 into a chamber 2, the pressure being suddenly released at the valve 1a, superheated steam or other hot inert gas being introduced by nozzles 3, while the whole is heated by furnace gases passing through a jacket surrounding the vessel. Agitators stir the sludge and the oil vapours pass of by a pipe 4, while the partially treated sludge passes by a tube 5 into a vertical vessel provided with a feed worm 6, steam jets 7, and a heated jacket. Oil vapours pass off by <PICT:0376756/III/1> pipe 8 and may pass with those in pipe 4 to the catchpot 15, maintained at 120-150 DEG C., where heavy oils condense, the light oils and steam passing to a heated bubble tower 16, from which oil is drawn off at the base 18; the lightest fraction is condensed and separated from water in the separator 21. The dry residues are discharged through a water seal 10. The furnace 12 superheats steam in the coil 11, provides heating medium for the jackets, and if necessary preheats the sludge.
