Abstract

376,139. Lawn-mowers. ENFIELD CYCLE CO., Ltd. and SMITH, F. W., of Enfield Works, Hewell Road, Redditch. Nov. 2, 1931, No. 30277. [Class 6 (ii).] In power transmission mechanism for motor lawn-mowers wherein a main shaft b of an internal-combustion engine a is disposed in axial alignment with a transmission shaft c, and is connected thereto by epicyclic gearing contained in a rotatable housing associated with a friction clutch, the sun wheel f is formed on a reduced extension e of the shaft b, and the inner end of the shaft c is formed with an axial socket j adapted to accommodate the end of the extension e, so that the shaft b forms a bearing for the inner end of the shaft c. The shaft c is formed with a terminal flange i carrying bearing pins h for the planet wheels g. The rotatable housing consists of two cupshaped members p, s, bolted together, the inner member p having integral therewith an internally-toothed annular wheel n engaging the planet wheels. The housing is held against rotation so that the drive is transmitted to the shaft c, by two semicircular friction bands u pivoted at v and forced together by springs, being adapted to be forced apart to release the housing by a cam operated by a lever z<1>. The friction bands may be retained in position by an annular plate s<1> secured to the members. The shaft c is mounted in bearings in the side frame, and carries a pinion m for a chain or other drive to the mower.
