Abstract

375,413. Games. SHEARER, H. L., 37, Kilmarnock Road, Giffnock, Renfrewshire. March 27, 1931, No. 9331. [Class 132 (ii).] A racket for use in playing a tip-cat game comprises a frame having a slightly curved or straight side a forming a continuation of the racket handle and a substantially curved or semicircular side c, the frame so formed being strung with gut or the like after the manner of a tennis racket, and a projecting finger or nose e in substantial alignment with the handle for tipping the tip-cat into the air. The tip-cat may consist of a hollow piece of cork g, Fig. 5, plugged by pointed cork ends h which may be forced in to compress the entrapped air and thus give resiliency. A protective coat of enamel is applied or polished shields are affixed thereto. The tip-cat may be made in one piece of hollow celluloid, rubber, compressed cork or other light material. When made of rubber the contained air may be under pressure. The tip-cat may be built up of cork containing an inflated rubber bag. In Fig. 9 is shown a device, in the form of a thistle, for projecting the tip-cat into the air preparatory to being struck by the racket. The device comprises a helical spring l enclosed between a rubber cover k and a loose cone r. The cone rests on the domed top of a sliding collar s bearing on a pair of weighted clutch arms l. A plunger p when depressed by the player compresses the spring and is retained in the lower position by the clutch arms. The tip-cat is placed on the top of the device and is projected upwardly by the spring when the player disengages the clutch arms by striking the top of the device with the racket. To add interest to the game further appliances may be introduced, for example, wickets, miniature goals, baskets or suspended nets.
