Abstract
374,554. Coil-break switches. COATES, W. A., 165, Hale Road, Hale, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. March 30, 1931, No. 9601. [Class 38 (v).] Contacts; arcrupturing devices.- The movable contact of a liquidbreak switch comprises a main part 3 and a floating part 4, the latter engaging in the closed position with a fixed contact 2 in a metal explosion pot 1 having an insulating liner and also with the part 3. Inserts 21, 22 of magnetic material, at least one of which is magnetized, cause the part 4 to follow the part 3 as the latter moves downwards to open the switch. An arc is thus struck between the members 2, 4 causing an increase of pressure in the liquid in the pot 1. which pressure forces liquid to flow through an aperture 11, chambers 12, 13, and ducts 15. When the flange 5 engages the wall 10, the part 4 is stopped and the part 3 moves downwards alone, so striking a second arc between members 3, 4 in series with that between members 2, 4, the second arc being extinguished by the flow of liquid through the ducts 15.
