[Class 34 (i).] Drying apparatus for webs of material such as cloth comprises a pair of opposed apertured diaphragms located one on each side of the part of the web and having nozzles extending therethrough or therefrom which are convergent towards the path of the web, certain or all of the nozzles being inclined in one direction relatively to the web, so as to cause the drying fluid to travel along the web. If desired the web of material may be heated so that the moisture is driven off by the air current, in the form of steam. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with a vacuum apparatus so that the material may be heated to a relatively low temperature. The drying fluid after taking up moisture from the web may pass through a cooler where it gives up heat to the incoming air. As shown in the drawings, diaphragms 10, 11 are oppositely disposed on either side of the path of a web 12 which is to be dried. Ducts 13 of short length but large width are formed transversely in the diaphragms, and have nozzles 14 which taper towards the path of the web and are inclined so that the drying fluid after leaving the nozzles tends to travel in one direction along the web. Hot air passes through an opening 15 in a casing 16 mounted on the back of diaphragm 10. A discharge casing 17 is mounted on the back of diaphragm 11. Part of the air passes through ducts 18 to a chamber 19 on the back of diaphragm 11 and within the casing 17, and thence through the nozzles of diaphragm 11. The drying air is discharged at the sides of the apparatus, some of the air passing directly into a discharge main 20 and the remainder through casings 21, 17 and then through openings 23 into the discharge main 20.
