Abstract

374,126. Thermionic cathodes. FREEDMAN, P., 70, Durley Road, London. March 5, 1931, No. 6807. [Class 39 (i).] In an equipotential cathode having a resistance mounted on or embedded in a refractory insulating body such as magnesia, alumina or porcelain, deleterious effects of electrolytic action within the refractory body upon its resistance are minimized by means of a refractory conducting element or shield arranged in the region of the maximum electrolytic effect, and of such dimensions as not to cool the insulating material to such an extent as to displace the region of maximum electrolysis. The shields may consist of bands, discs or rods in contact with the resistance and the refractory body. They may be placed at the ends of the resistance, or preferably, as shown, bands 12 are arranged at points of the refractory body 7 near the ends of the resistance 6, and are connected with the ends. The shield is arranged so as not to short-circuit the resistance. The resistance may be of tungsten, or tungsten carbide orsilicide. In another heater a crinkled wire is mounted on a flat insulating plate by means of hooks or pins, and the shields consist of discs embedded in the plate. The cathode may be used in valves or in metallic vapour lamps as described in Specification 329,627, (Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.]. Specification 367,825 also is referred to.
