Abstract

374,100. Hand driving-mechanism. WALTER, C., 19, Heckinghauserstrasse, Barmen, Germany. Feb. 28, 1931, No. 6371. [Class 136 (ii).] A non-reversing hand crank for starting engines, actuating hoisting winches, or like operations is provided with a clamping coupling and a reverse lock so that, on rotating the hand crank in one direction the coupling causes a radially yielding intermediate member to grip the engine or other shaft to be rotated, while the grip is released and the intermediate member or the hand crank is arrested by the reverse lock on backward rotation of the shaft. In one form, Figs 1 and 2, the shaft g to be actuated carries an intermediate member or sleeve b provided at one end with slots f encircled by a split band tk forming a member of the clamping coupling. The ends of the band t<k> carry a forked head t<2>, to which the crank-handle u<1> is pivoted at u<10>, and a flange t<1> engaged by a projection u<3> on the crankhandle, so that the band tk clamps the slotted part of the sleeve b on the shaft g when the handle u<1> is turned clockwise. The unslotted part of the sleeve b is encircled by a band t<r> forming part of the reverse lock ; the ends of the band t<r> carry a forked head t<20> pivoted at u<20> to a member u<2> engaging a fixed member w, and a flange t<10> engaged by a projection u<30> on the member u<2>. A spring-pressed bolt y in the head t<20> engages ratchet recesses z in the sleeve b and prevents reverse rotation of the sleeve b by the shaft g. To enable the shaft g to be turned by the handle u<1> in a stepby-step manner, a plunger 2 sliding in a lug 4 on the band t<r> can be pushed into engagement with a toothed wheel 1 on the shaft g ; the plunger 2 is held in engagement with the wheel teeth by the side pressure transmitted from the shaft g when the handle u<1> is turned counterclockwise and is released by a spring 3 when the handle is again turned in a clockwise direction to rotate the shaft g. In modifications, (1) two concentric sleeves b are each engaged by a looking band such as t<r> ; (2) the locking band t<r> engages an extension of the band t<k> instead of directly engaging the sleeve b ; (3) the crank lever u<4>, Fig. 5, has a cam face bearing against a sliding fork t<4> adapted to engage the intermediate member t<5>, which is slotted and grips the shaft g when the lever u<4> is turned in the clockwise direction ; (4) two oppositely wound springs c, d, Fig. 6, serve as the clamping coupling and reverse lock. The spring c is wound on the slotted end of the sleeve b and the end c<1> of the spring is coiled on a pin k<1> on the handle ul, which is secured to a casing a. The spring d is coiled on the unslotted part of the sleeve b and its end d<1> engages a non-rotatable member e<1> having a squared or hexagonal end e<3> engaging a fixed member e<30>.
