Abstract

<PICT:0373897/III/1> In washing liquids with liquids, e.g. mixed alcohol and naphtha with water, naphtha with caustic soda, distillates with acid, oils with phenol or liquid sulphur dioxide, one liquid is made to pass in fine drops in countercurrent through continuously moving layers of the other, the drops uniting and forming a continuous layer between each passage. The heavier liquid enters a tower 1 at 9, flows downwards through pipes 4 and is discharged at 10. The lighter liquid is fed into the tower at 6, accumulates under each perforated plate 2, is forced through the perforations in drops which pass through a layer of heavy liquid and reunite below the next plate 2, and is finally discharged from the tower at 8. The level of heavy liquid above each plate 2 is controlled by a device such as a float 12 which actuates a valve 14. Ingredients may be added to alter the surface tension of one or both liquids, e.g. soaps or alcohols may be added to water used for washing naphtha. In a modification the perforated plates carry upwardly extending pipes through which the lighter liquid flows, the heavier liquid passing downwards through the perforations. In a further modification, some of the pipes extend upwards, and some downwards.
