Abstract
373,515. Road vehicle side screens. CARR, R. L., 31, Milk Street, Boston, U.S.A. Sept. 28, 1931, No. 26974. [Class 108 (i).] In road vehicles the side windows or closure panels are arranged to be raised from a lowered position to a raised position whereby they are in direct contact, thus forming a continuous closure without the interposition of posts &c. The panels, which are preferably glass panels, may be unframed. Panels 6, 7 are arranged in the door 1 and bodywall 2 respectively and are provided at the lower edge with a metal channel 20 to which are secured blocks 48 connected by leaf springs 26 to slides 29 co-operating with guides 30. The rear panel 7 is also provided with a block 61 having a leaf spring 60 connecting it to a slide 66. These leaf springs tend to urge the adjoining edges of the panels 6, 7 into contact, and for this purpose the panels may have bevelled egdes 79 one of which may be cushioned as at 11, Fig. 10, by transparent cellulose material. The upper edges of the panels are protected by strips 23 and these are urged into contact with the inclined edges 84 of a valance 83, Fig. 4, carried by the frame 81 of the hood.. The forward edge of the panel 6 is adapted to be guided between rubber cushions 77, 78, Fig. 3, enclosed in a channel 74 carried by the door 1 which also carries a member 73 serving to enclose the windscreen and to constitute the door-post. The door 1 and body wall 2 are provided with slots 15, Fig. 5, so that the adjoining edges of the panels 6, 7 may remain in contact, and the panel 7 is arranged to be moved on the opening of the door 1 to prevent injury by means of a stud 105 which swings a cam plate 106 and through a rod 109 oscillates a member 110 to force the panel 7 away from the panel 6. Reclosing of the door releases the panel 7. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the panel 206 is raised substantially parallelly until the slides 205 engage stops 214 when continued movement of the panel causes it to swing upwardly and rearwardly into contact with the panel 207, a member 232 ensuring the returning of the panel before it is lowered into the door.
