Abstract
Acrolein in suitable solution is oxidized to acrylic acid by the action of air, oxygen or of gases which contain free oxygen, water being excluded as far as possible, the reaction being controlled so that the concentration of acrolein is not allowed to fall below 20 per cent of the original amount. Catalysts such as heavy metals or their salts, increased temperature or pressure may be used. Suitable solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons or carbon tetrachloride. In examples a solution of acrolein in benzene is oxidized by air or oxygen. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the production of homologues of acrylic acid from homologues of acrolein and to the use of an oxygen-evolving substance such as a superoxide for oxidation. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
