[Class 28 (ii).] The conveyer of a fishdressing machine is provided with means for gripping the tail which are elevated above the general level of the conveyer to receive the fish and then withdrawn below the general level to retract the gripping means from the path of the knives or other tools. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the conveyer is of the endless type and the fish is supported upon plate-sets 4, 4a, the sets being spaced from one another to permit discharge of bones, offal, &c. The plates are grooved at 4b to position the fish accurately and the plate 4a is slotted at its edge to permit the rising and falling movements of jaws 6, 7 which are respectively secured to coaxial shafts 11, 10. The jaws 6, 7 have a connecting pin 19, which ensures that they move in unison, and are pressed together by a spring 15 which acts upon the jaw 6. The jaws are moved away from one another to receive the fish by rollers 16 on the shaft 11 engaging with stationary cams 17, 18 on the conveyer framework. The rising and falling movement is effected by arms 22, 23 on the shaft 10 abutting against the stationary ramps 20, 21 also on the conveyor framework. In operation, the jaws are raised and opened to receive the fish and are then closed and swung below the general level of the conveyer. The plates are supported to prevent sagging by strips 5. In a modification, Fig. 7, the gripping jaws do not project above the level of the conveyer plates. The fish is inserted tail first between the gripping-jaws 25 whilst the conveyer plates are rounding the pulley 2, and in consequence the tail is pushed below the level of the conveyer. By the action of cams 26 the jaws close on the tail and maintain it below the level of the conveyer.
