Abstract

371,291. Bottle - capping machines. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc., Highlandtown, Baltimore, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Booth, G. W. ; c/o Crown Cork & Seal Co., Inc., Highlandtown, Baltimore, U.S.A.) Nov. 3, 1931, No. 30448. Convention date, July 27. [Class 125 (ii).] A machine for capping bottles &c. comprises an expansible, segmental throat, which irons a substantially flat disc over the bead from the top thereof to its widest part without touching the extreme edge of the disc, which buckles under the bead. Each segment 23 has a flange 24 which rocks about a split ring 29 which may be integral with the flange, resting on housing 28, and the segments are held yieldingly together by a spring 30. In a sleeve 47 carried by an arm clamped on the standard 45 works a tubular member 50 recessed below the sleeve 47 to accommodate the housing 28 and having a collar 56 supporting a supply hopper 55. A presser tool 20 is connected by a ball-andsocket joint to a stem 19 encircled by a spring 21 which presses against a plug 52 in the member 50 and an abutment 53 on the stem. A disc is fed below the tool 20 by a slide plate 61 having a recessed end and being connected to the stem 19 by links 73, levers 74 pivoted at 75<1>, links 78 and a yoke 77. Vertical move. ment is imparted to the member 50 via a rack and pinion by an arm 18 mounted in the sleevecarrying arm. In Figs. 2 and 3 the member 50 is shown in its uppermost position. A disc rests on an annular guide 18 hinged at 64 to the slide rest plate 58 and held in position by a hook 69 engaging a projecting screw 70 which supports a plate 71 which limits movement of the disc to the right, When the member 50 is depressed the tool 20 presses the cap on the vessel, which is centred by leaf springs 72, and on further downward movement the throat 23 expands, ironing and buckling the margin of the disc around and under the bead, the stem 19 moving upward relatively to the member 50, thus moving the slide to the left, the stack of discs dropping. When the member 50 is raised the stem moves downward relatively thereto and the slide moves to the right, positioning a disc under the tool 20. When the slide is to the right a lever 87, pivoted on the collar 56 is held as shown by the engagement of its short arm with the sleeve-carrying arm, but when the member 50 is depressed and the slide 61 thus moved to the left the short arm is disengaged and the long arm is spring-pulled down, a shoulder thereon moving into the path of a stud on a lever 74 and locking the slide into the left-hand position. Relative movement between the vessel and the throat may be obtained by moving either, by hand or power.
