Abstract
370,758. Vehicle running boards ; treads. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI, 21, Via Fabio Filzi, Milan, Italy, July 3, 1931, No. 19232. Convention date, July 3, 1930. [Class 103 (iv).] The running-board of a motor vehicle is built up of a metallic base 1 and a tread or cover 5 of soft or hard rubber, synthetic resin, or like plastic material which is moulded to the base and becomes keyed to or interlocked with the base during the moulding process. According to the construction shown the base 1 is provided with a number of tapered holes 2 and the rubber &c. 5 is moulded on to the base under pressure so that it is squeezed through the holes and forms a series of heads 6 that prevent its subsequent removal. The final moulding and vulcanization or hardening are effected in a press. Instead of the holes 2 the base may be provided with a number of tapering slots or the upper surface of the base may be furnished with dovetailed grooves. At its edge 3 the base 1 is preferably bent back upon itself and reinforced by a metal strip insertion 4, while the rubber &c. 5 is moulded completely around such edge. The running-board is attached to the vehicle frame or chassis either by brackets 7 secured to the underside, or by means of bolts that. pass completely through the base 1 but not through the tread.
