Abstract
370,665. Gravityseparation apparatus. HARTLEY, J. W., Drysdale House, Stone, Staffordshire, and HARTLEY, E., 3, Dartmouth Avenue, Westlands, Newcastle. April 20, 1931, No. 11691. [Class 111.] In apparatus for removing sediment from a settling tank having scrapers or sweepers carried by a central shaft or other rotary support driven by a tractor running around the tank, the tractor drives the support by means of an arm separate from the scraper and pivotally connected to the support. As shown in Fig. 1, a tractor 15 driven by an electric motor 23<1> travels on the outer wall of the effluent channel 3 of the tank 1 and by means of an arm 19 rotates a central shaft 9 to which arms 12 carrying scrapers 14 are attached. In order to avoid tilting stresses the arm 19 is pivoted on the shaft 9 or to a sleeve keyed on the shaft. Liquid is supplied to the tank through a pipe 29 and a central distributing chamber 30 having a deflector plate 31 at its lower end. A girder or bridge 6 spans the upper end of the tank and has bearings for the shaft 9. Current is supplied to the motor 231 by cables 26, 27 on the arm 19 and bridge 6 respectively, a ring and brush contact being arranged on the shaft 9. The wheels of the tractor may be provided with rubber tyres. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement in which the pipe 29 is carried by the bridge 6 and a floating scum collector 34 is drawn round the tank by chains 36 connected to uprights 35 on the scraper arms 12. The scum collector may consist of a light plate 37<1> of wood or metal, supported by braced planks, Fig. 8, or a sealed tube, Fig. 9. It is arranged at such an angle that the scum is collected towards the periphery where it can be removed periodically through a suitable outlet. A further modification is described in which the tractor travels on the inner wall of the channel 3, the bridge 6 being supported at a higher level on the outer wall and the chamber 30 supported on the shaft 9. With this arrangement the scum collector 34 is drawn round by chains attached to the arm 19.
